Comfrey is a herb, having a root system with broad hairy leaves and multicolor flowers, ranging from pink, light purple, white and cream. The scientific name of comfrey is Symphytum officinale and it belongs to the herb family Boraginaceae. This tree is used in herbal organic gardening and as fertilizers. This plant is native to Europe. The ancient Greeks and Romans used to boil the leaves in water to heal broken bones. Tea made from comfrey has immense health benefits and is accepted worldwide as a herbal medicine.

Recipe

Before preparing comfrey tea, you should know the exact procedure. The leaves and roots are mainly used in the recipe. The standard procedure for making comfrey tea, is to boil 2 tsps dried infusion material in 2 cups of water for 5 minutes. You can also pour boiling water in comfrey and let it stand for 10 minutes. Strain it, and then use it for various purposes. 

If you use fresh comfrey, ¼th cup is the exact measurement. You can also utilize its bark and seeds for herbal drink. The quantity should be 1 tsp of bark in 2 tsps of seed in 2 cups of boiling water. You can also add sweetener, honey or lemon juice for a pleasing taste. 

As a fertilizer, this tea can be prepared by placing a handful of comfrey leaves in a container. Pour sufficient water to cover the leaves. Cover the container and let is stand for 4 weeks. Remove the leaves after that and squeeze as much juice as possible. In one gallon of water mix 1/3 cup of comfrey juice and this preparation is an effective fertilizer as manure mulch, compost activator and also as liquid fertilizer.

The medicinal value of comfrey tea is due to the presence of large number of pharmacology active compounds. It contains rosmarinic acid, allantoin, symphytine, echimidine, tannins, lasiocarpine, pyrrolizidine alkaloids, phytosterols, phenolic compounds, etc. It is also rich in vitamin B12, phosphorous, calcium, nitrogen and potassium. All these elements have their own medicinal properties that benefit your body in some or other way. Tannins have astringent properties while allantoin is the most important compound that promotes tissue regeneration and wound healing. Essential fatty acids and symphytum are active compounds that helps in controlling cholesterol levels and in treatment of ulcers, respectively.

Consuming oral comfrey products or comfrey tea is restricted as per FDA guidelines. Internal consumption of comfrey tea causes liver damage as it contains pyrrolidizine alkaloids that is considered hepatoxic. Comfrey is safe for topical application. Make sure that you clean the wound properly before applying comfrey products. Use Comfrey tea or comfrey products should not be used continuously and it should be discontinued after four weeks. Comfrey tea is also not suggested to patients under dietary potassium restrictions. Comfrey treat must be strictly avoided during pregnancy.
