Whimsy
I have always had a tendency to be a bit uptight. As a child, I often found myself worrying about things and trying to keep everything in order. These traits can sometimes be exhausting, so finding little ways to invite some whimsy into life really can feel like a breath of fresh air. Even a gentle shift in perspective on everyday things can make a meaningful difference for our well-being. Let’s gently encourage ourselves to welcome a bit more whimsy into our lives.
Whimsy is a quality of playful, lighthearted imagination — the little spark that makes you pause and smile at something unexpected, silly, or delightfully out of place. It’s the opposite of taking everything seriously. Think of it as the adult permission slip to be a little bit childlike on purpose.
It shows up in small ways: choosing the mug with the funny face over the plain one, taking a scenic route just to see what’s there, scribbling in the margins, wearing the earrings that make you happy for no occasion.
Here’s how to weave more of it into your day-to-day life:
In your space
Add one thing that makes you grin every time you see it — a quirky figurine, a plant with a name, lights strung somewhere unexpected. Let your home have a little personality instead of looking like a catalog.
In your routine
Pick one mundane task and make it ridiculous. Dance while you wait for coffee to brew. Give your to-do list dramatic titles. Name your recurring alarms something that makes you laugh when they go off.
In what you consume
Read something purely for fun — a graphic novel, a mystery, a children’s book you loved. Watch something absurd. Follow at least one account online that exists purely to post delightful things (animals, optical illusions, vintage oddities).
In how you move through the world
Look up more. Notice things — the shape of a cloud, a funny shop sign, a dog that looks like its owner. Carry a small notebook and jot down anything that strikes you as weird or wonderful.
In how you connect
Send a random “this made me think of you” text. Leave a funny note for someone. Bring an unexpected snack to share. Whimsy grows in spontaneity and generosity.
The deeper secret — whimsy isn’t about adding more things to your life. It’s about lowering your resistance to delight. It asks, “What if I let this be fun?” Most of the time, that choice is available. You just have to take it.
